Britney Spears becomes just the second artist in the Billboard Hot 100’s 52-year history to debut multiple songs at No. 1, as “Hold It Against Me” blasts in at the summit, Billboard reports.

The track is Spears’ fourth No. 1 on the Hot 100. Prior to “3,” she reigned with her debut single “…Baby One More Time” (two weeks, 1999) and “Womanizer” (one week, 2008).

The previous first, second, and third spot each dip one below Britney. Bruno Mars’ “Grenade” is now No. 2, Katy Perry’s “Firework” at No. 3, and Rihanna’s “What’s My Name” ft. Drake is now at No. 4.

Bruno Mars’ “Grenade” No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100 This Week

Standard

Bruno Mars’ “Grenade” once again passes Katy Perry’s “Firework” to steal the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. However, Perry’s “Firework” only slides to No. 2.

Billboard reports that “Grenade” supplanted “Firework” two weeks ago, only to have Perry’s track reclaim the chart’s lead spot for a fourth cumulative frame on last week’s ranking. It is the first time two songs have alternated holds at No. 1 over four weeks since “Live Your Life” by T.I. featuring Rihanna traded spots with Beyonce’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)” in December 2008.

Here is the rest of this week’s Billboard Hot 100 top 10:

  • No. 3 – “What’s My Name” by Rihanna ft. Drake
  • No. 4 – “We R Who We R” by Ke$ha
  • No. 5 – “Raise Your Glass” by P!nk
  • No. 6 – “Tonight (I’m Loving You)” By Enrique Iglesias ft. DJ Frank E and Ludacris
  • No. 7 – “Black and Yellow” by Wiz Khalifa
  • No. 8 – “The Time (Dirty Bit)” by the Black Eyed Peas
  • No. 9 – “Just The Way You Are” by Bruno Mars
  • No. 10 – “Only Girl (In The World) – by Rihanna

Noteworthy: “What’s My Name” grabs the airplay gainer for the seventh week in it’s 11 weeks on the chart. Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow” swapped spots with “The Time” by the Black Eyed Peas.

Expectations: Britney Spears’ new single “Hold It Against Me” is going to give Mars and Perry a run for their money next week as Spears vies for the No. 1 spot. The single was released on radio airwaves Jan. 10 and iTunes Jan. 11. The single is expected to sell more than 400,000 copies.

There were some big changes this week; anything surprise you? Tell me in the comments!

Katy Perry’s “Firework” Fires Back to No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100

Standard

Katy Perry reclaims the top spot this week on the Billboard 100 charts. Last week she had to duck out of the way because Bruno Mars was throwing his “Grenade” to No. 1 but this week she popped “Firework’s” in Mars’ face as he falls one spot down to No. 2. Ok I’m done…

Back in the Billboard Hot 100 top 10, the next three spots hold steady just as they were last week. At No. 3 its Ke$ha’s “We R Who We R.” The No. 4 slot goes to Rihanna’s “What’s My Name” ft. Drake. This song is also the top song in the Radio Songs chart for the third week in a row.

The rest of the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week:

Nina’s Weekly Wrap

Standard

Hi out there music raters!! I only have a few songs on my list to talk about this week due to the holidays so here they go. My favorite song this week was “Shake Up Christmas” by Train. It’s a really fun and earthy Christmas song. I’m a big fan of Train and was really happy with this song. I really liked “Perfect” by Pink. I loved how sweet and genuine it was. Although Pink may not always be sweet Pink is always genuine. “Howlin’ for You” by The Black Keys is funky and classic. These guys are great at bringing back the fun and funky sound of the 70’s.  I really enjoyed Ryan Star’s voice in “Unbreak”. It is a really good pop/rock song. The only song I did not like this week was “Santa Gimme Hos” by J Randall. This song is so disrespectful to the holiday and it is not even entertaining. Other than this awful tune it was a pretty good week here at Hitpredictor. Happy rating!!

This is also Nin’a last week blogging with us!! It’s been fun having Nina and DJ Lilly blog with us and they will both be missed. Thanks for your contributions!!

How Pop Music Took Over 2010

Standard

I’ve got quite an interesting article for y’all this morning! Read Billboard’s story about how POP music accomplished such big things in 2010.

“In a year when some of the music industry’s few remaining presumptions, such as “digital sales will keep growing” and “tours can withstand a weak economy,” were subverted, no one can be blamed for not foreseeing all the ways in which pop music would take over the marketplace. But a takeover it was.

Seven of the year’s 20 best-selling albums were by pop artists — that is, in Billboard parlance, acts without significant success on our genre-based charts, such as Country, R&B/Hip-Hop, Modern Rock, etc. This compares with four in 2009 and two in 2005. The 2010 top 10 includes Susan Boyle’s “I Dreamed a Dream,” Lady Gaga’s “The Fame,” Justin Bieber’s “My World” and “My World 2.0” and the Black Eyed Peas’ “The E.N.D.” If you expand the definition of pop to include Taylor Swift and Lady Antebellum, whose mainstream-leaning country hits were embraced at pop radio, and Eminem, whose “Recovery” featured some of his most unabashedly crossover songs to date, you could argue that nine of the top 10 albums speak to pop’s dominance (all but Andrea Bocelli’s “My Christmas”).

The fact that Billboard’s top two artists of the year, Gaga and Swift, didn’t chart on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums is also telling. It’s the first time that neither of the year’s top two artists has graced that chart since 1997, when LeAnn Rimes and Spice Girls came in at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively.

But perhaps most striking is the way in which synth-driven, Auto-Tuned, four-on-the floor-influenced pop dominated the Hot 100. Of the 15 songs to reach No. 1 on the chart this year, just six fall outside of this descriptive: Eminem’s “Not Afraid” and “Love the Way You Lie,” Rihanna’s “Rude Boy” and “What’s My Name?”, B.o.B featuring Bruno Mars’ “Nothin’ on You” and Mars’ “Just the Way You Are.” When these are the four artists delivering the closest thing to a slow jam, it’s safe to say we’ve entered a new era…”

Do you think POP music will be just as successful in 2011? Tell us what you think in the comments!

Katy Perry locks in week No. 3 on Billboard Hot 100 with “Firework”

Standard

Katy Perry remains locked into the No. 1 position on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Firework” this week, despite a fall in downloads it continues to climb the Radio Songs chart and takes the Airplay Gainer tag for the week according to Billboard.com.

Bruno Mars is able to usurp Rihanna for the No. 2 position this week; many predicted her “What’s My Name?” featuring Drake would move back into No. 1 this week, but Mars’ similarly explosive title “Grenade” stops that move from happening, and steals Rihanna’s former spot.

But Rihanna was making news of her own as Billboard reports her “What’s My Name” replaces “Only Girl (In the World) on the Radio Songs chart, which is the first time an artist has swapped titles on that chart since T.I. posted back-to-back chart toppers with “Whatever You Like” and “Live Your Life” in 2008-09.

The rest of the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 includes:

  • At No. 3, “What’s My Name?” Rihanna feat. Drake
  • At No. 4, “Raise Your Glass,” Pink
  • At No. 5, “We R Who We R,” Ke$ha
  • At No. 6, “Just the Way You Are,” Bruno Mars

Katy Perry’s Firework maintains position at No. 1 on Hot 100

Standard

Katy Perry has held on to the No. 1 position on the Billboard Hot 100 for a second straight week with her latest single off Teenage Dream, “Firework.” Billboard reports this track also led the Digital Songs chart for a third straight week after recording 201,000 downloads.

However, it may be a fight for Perry to hold on for a third week as Billboard reports Rihanna’s “What’s My Name?” featuring Drake may be jockeying for a return to the top, as it climbs into the No. 2 spot and wins the Airplay Gainer award this week.

The rest of the Billboard 100 top 10 includes:

Katy Perry rides “Firework” to top of Hot 100

Standard

Katy Perry has returned to the top of the Hot 100 with “Firework.” This is her third straight radio single from her Teenage Dream album to make it to No. 1 on the chart. Billboard reports she is the first artist in 11 years to do just that – take three straight radio singles from an album to No. 1. The other two Teenage Dream singles to do so were “California Gurls,” the song of the summer, and the title track “Teenage Dream.”

The last female artist to take three radio singles from an album to No. 1 was Monica from her The Boy Is Mine album, with singles hitting No. 1 on the charts between June 1998 and February 1999 according to Billboard.

The rest of the Hot 100 top 10 includes:

  • At No. 2, “Raise Your Glass,” Pink

Pink reaches top of Billboard Hot 100 for third time in her career

Standard

Pink should raise her glass (of a non-alcoholic beverage of course) to toast her return to the No. 1 position on the Billboard Hot 10o for the third time with her new single “Raise Your Glass.”

Billboard reports the last time Pink was at the top of the list was in Sept. 2008 for her hit “So What,” and first reached the pinnacle in 2001 as part of her collaboration on the track “Lady Marmalade” which also featured Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, and Mya.

“Raise Your Glass” is the fifth single to reach No. 1 on the Hot 100 in as many weeks, which is a turnover rate that Billboard notes has not been seen in more than 20 years. The last time the chart saw a revolving door of this type it was in a eight week period in the fall of 1990.

The rest of the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 includes:

  • At No. 2, “Firework,” Katy Perry
  • At No. 3, “Only Girl (In the World)” Rihanna
  • At No. 4, “Just the Way You Are,” Bruno Mars
  • At No. 5, “What’s My Name,” Rihanna feat. Drake
  • At No. 6, “We R Who We R,” Ke$ha

  • At No. 9, “The Time (The Dirty Bit),” Black Eyed Peas

DJ Lilly’s picks and predictions, with an eye on the Hot 100 this week!

Standard

Hey HP!

I hope everyone had a fantabulous holiday weekend! So, I was gone all weekend and didn’t have much time to rate songs for the week, but I didn’t want to leave you with nothing, so I decided to concentrate on the Hot 100 this week.

I still like both of the Rihanna songs that are on the list and I even tried to buy the new Rihanna album, Loud, on Black Friday, but they were sold out.

I still hate the Ke$ha song (“We R Who We R”) and still don’t really understand why it’s so popular.

Katy Perry’s “Firework” is a good song, and the video is awesome too.

My favorite song on the list is probably Pink’s “Raise Your Glass” (its growing on me).

I also still really like “Just a Dream” by Nelly.

Two songs that are on the Hot 100 that I hope eventually reach the Top 10 are “Please Don’t Go” by Mike Posner (I am really starting to like that song and I find it stuck in my head once in awhile) and “Whip My Hair” by Willow Smith – I think both have pretty much run their course though.

The songs I heard in the jukebox were “Hummingbird Heartbeat” by Katy Perry, which was OK.

Another song I heard was “Last Night” by Good Charlotte, which wasn’t OK. I am really disappointed in them sometimes.

“Hey Alli” by Runner Runner was pretty good, “The One That Got Away” by Katy Perry was alright; but not as good as her previous songs. “Hold My Hand” by Michael Jackson and Akon could’ve been better; but it wasn’t too awful. I still really like “Desperate Girls and Stupid Boys” by Kimberly Caldwell (that is the title according to her website).

Rihanna sets new record with “Only Girl” moving to No. 1 on Hot 100

Standard

Rihanna has returned to the top of the Hot 100 with her first single “Only Girl (In the World)” off her new release Loud.

Just two weeks ago the pop star was at the top of the Hot 100 with her second single “What’s My Name?” feat. Drake. Billboard reports it is the first time in the history of the Hot 100 that an album’s debut single reaches No. 1 after the second single does. This week her former No. 1 single moves into the No. 8 position.

Billboard also noted that “Only Girl” is Rihanna’s fourth single to ascend to No. 1 in 2010. That stat makes her the first female – and artist of any gender – to hit the top four times in any calendar year since Usher did it in 2004.

The rest of the Billboard Hot 100 includes:

  • At No. 2, “Raise your Glass,” Pink
  • At No. 3, “Like a G6,” Far East Movement
  • At No. 4, “We R Who We R,” Ke$ha
  • At No. 5, “Just a Dream,” Nelly
  • At No. 6, “Firework,” Katy Perry
  • At No. 7, “Just the Way You Are,” Bruno Mars
  • At No. 8, “What’s My Name?” Rihanna feat. Drake
  • At No. 9, “F**k You (Forget You),” Cee Lo Green
  • At No. 10, “Bottom’s Up,” Trey Songz feat. Nicki Minaj
