Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj Heat Up the Top 40’s Chart

Standard

Nicki Minaj, now already causing a stir as a judge on American Idol, has a stellar week at Top 40. Not only is her new single, “Va Va Voom,” a HitPredictor this week, but she is also featured on this week’s other HitPredictor, the brand-new single from Justin Bieber.

Justin is really coming into his own as a credible radio artist this year. The first single from his current album hit the top 10 in airplay at Top 40, then he followed up with his first top 5 airplay hit, “As Long As You Love Me” (currently #2 at Top 40). Now his third single, “Beauty and a Beat,” is a HitPredictor this week and likely to follow those two singles up the charts.

Hot New Music In Jukebox: Nicki Minaj, Usher, and More

Standard

Well hello there! Hope y’all are enjoying hump day… Here’s a little something to make the rest of the day go by that much faster.

We’ve just added brand spanking new music to the jukebox and I thought you would want to know. Nicki Minaj is at it again. She just turned out “Starships,” produced by famed producer RedOne, it has a bouncier feel than most of Minaj’s work. It’s a bit off base for the rapstress, but she likes the feeling it will give off.

“I know people are gonna love it. It feels right,” Minaj told Ryan Seacrest yesterday, “It just feels good. It makes people feel happy and that’s all I want. I want tho start the year off with making people feel good.”

Next up, we have a new Usher R&B track “Climax” also aimed at making people feel good. The track produced and co-written by Diplo, has Usher cruising in Falsetto and reminding the world that he is capable of making pristinely arranged slow jams like “Nice and Slow.”

The song dropped yesterday thanks to Valentine’s day and Diplo only had “nice” things to say about the record. “I’m pretty sure in 9 months there are gonna be a lot of new babies that this song is responsible for,” Diplo posted on Twitter on Tuesday (Feb. 14). Usher’s Twitter message was simple enough: “Happy Valentine’s Day to all!!”

Enjoy those tracks and much more in the juke now!!

HitPredictor Chart Results

Standard

Here are the chart toppers for the week over at HitPredictor. Check ’em out!

A few weeks back Avril Lavigne released the music video for “Smile”, produced by the legendary Max Martin, it’s the 2nd single off of Goodbye Lullaby. The video was delivered as a response to her fans request, as they were asked to choose between “Push” or “Smile” as the next single. This week it’s a HitPredictor at Mainstream Top 40.

David Guetta’s newest hit “Where Dem Girls At” features the princess of Hip-Hop Nicki Minaj, alongside club king Flo Rida. Rumor has it that Lil Wayne was going to feature “I’m On One” on his highly anticipated forthcoming album, Tha Carter IV, but instead handed the track over to DJ Khaled. This week both songs are Rhythmic HitPredictors.

Maybe Lil Wayne gave “I’m On One” to DJ Khaled because he knew he would have enough hits for himself. The third single from Tha Carter IV dropped this week. “How To Love” is totally different from previous singles off the album, “6 Foot, 7 Foot” and “John”, as he’s gone for a a slower record with him singing throughout it. It’s a Rhythmic and Urban HitPredictor this week.

As you can imagine Mumford & Sons’ “The Cave” is another huge smash at Alternative radio, just like the previous single “Little Lion Man”, but the band that wowed everyone at the Grammys and was nominated for Best New Artist and Rock Song Of The Year, has its first HitPredictor this week at Hot AC.

Kelly Clarkson joined Jason Aldean on stage at the CMA awards last November to perform “Don’t You Wanna Stay”, to a very positive reception. Since then it’s become a huge Country hit, has been a Hitpredictor at Hot AC and is now crossing over as a HitPredictor at Mainstream AC this week.

17 Year old Scotty McCreery is on top of the world after being crowned king of the 10th season of American Idol. His coronation single “I Love You This Big”, released within a few weeks after American Idol ended, is already racing up the Country charts and it’s a Country HitPredictor this week.

“Walk” is the eleventh and last track, as well as the second single from American rock band Foo Fighters. The song can be heard in the background of the bar scene and closing credits of the movie Thor. Dave Grohl came up with the verse about “having a trial” after the time he was helping his first daughter, Violet Maye learn to walk, and eventually she was able to walk on her own. This week it’s both an Alternative and Active HitPredictor.

Things that are noteworthy about this:

See, I told you, she’s hot!

‘Now 37’ Shakes to the Top of Billboard 200

Standard

This week’s Billboard 200 starts off with “Now That’s What I Call Music 37” in the top spot with 151,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Clearly it was the Valentine’s Day shopping that pushed this one over the edge and other albums as well.

In the No. 2 spot we have Mumford & Sons’ “Sigh No More” with 49,000 in sales. This figure is up 99% since last week. According to Billboard, “it’s a new chart peak and the set’s second-best sales week. Not bad for an album that came out exactly a year ago today (Feb. 16, 2010). The majority of “Sigh’s” gain can be attributed to a surge in digital sales on Sunday night (13), thanks to the quartet’s performance on the Grammy Awards. The Glassnote Records act was also nominated for best new artist, which was presented during the broadcast.”

Here is the rest of the top 10 on this week’s Billboard 200:

  • No. 3 – Justin Bieber’s “My World 2.0”
  • No. 4 – Nicki Minaj’s “Pink Friday”
  • No. 5 – P!nk’s “Greatest Hits… So Far!!!”
  • No. 6 – Bruno Mars’ “Doo Wops & Hooligans”
  • No. 7 – Eminem’s “Recovery”
  • No. 8 – Rihanna’s “Loud”
  • No. 9 – Jason Aldean’s “My Kinda Party”
  • No. 10 – Justin Bieber’s “My Worlds Acoustic”

Notables: Justin Bieber is riding high this week with 2 albums on the Billboard 200, his new movie “Never Say Never” in theaters, multiple Grammy nominations, and a performance on the show with mentor Usher.

Billboard forgot to include last week that Minaj was the first female rapper to top the Billboard 200 since way back on Oct. 2, 1999, when Eve bowed atop the list with “Let There Be Eve.”

Believe it or not, but P!nk’s “Greatest Hits… So Far!!!” is her second-highest charting album. Of her five earlier albums, only her “Funhouse” set has been higher, when it debuted and peaked at No. 2 (Nov. 15, 2008).

Even though I’m going to post the Billboard Hot 100 tomorrow, I think it must be said that Lady Gaga is claiming the top spot on that chart with “Born This Way” being the 1,000th No. 1 on the Hot 100 since Billboard started charting. That’s a milestone! I will tell y’all more about Gaga’s reaction tomorrow but it’s breaking news that it happened right now.

Nicki Minaj Picks Up First No. 1 on Billboard 200

Standard

Nicki Minaj crowns the Billboard 200 albums chart for her first time with 45,000 in sales, since her “Pink Friday” debuted 11 weeks ago. Her record debuted at No. 2 and has spent it’s chart life in the top 10 only.

“Minaj’s patient wait for her turn at No. 1 is a rare sight. For the most part, an album is only No. 1 because it debuted there. It’s unusual for a set to climb to the top. Case in point: in 2010, there were 30 albums that hit No. 1, but just one — Lil Wayne’s “I Am Not A Human Being” — actually rose to the top. Wayne debuted at No. 2 off of just downloads, then fell to No. 16 the next week, only to reach No. 1 the next once the CD version of the album dropped,” claims Billboard.

Rock band Red debuts in the runner-up slot this week with its “Until We Have Faces” set, and at No. 1 on the Christian Albums chart. It bows with 43,000 — a bigger start than the 39,000 that greeted its second album, 2009’s “Innocence & Instinct,” upon its No. 15 entry on the Billboard 200.

Here are the rest of this week’s top 10 on the Billboard 200:

  • No. 3 – Ricky Martin’s “Musica + Alma + Sexo” with 32,000
  • No. 4 – Bruno Mars’ “Doo-Wops & Hooligans” with 32,000
  • No. 5 – Rihanna’s “Loud” with 29,000
  • No. 6 – Kidz Bop 19 with 28,000
  • No. 7 – Jason Aldean’s “My Kinda Party” with 27,000
  • No. 8 – Taylor Swift’s “Speak Now” with 27,000
  • No. 9 – P!nk’s “Greatest Hits … So Far!!!” with 25,000
  • No. 10 – Eminem’s “Recovery”

It is a very tight top 10 this week as numbers 3-10 are only separated by 6,696 units!

Amos Lee Takes No. 1 Spot on Billboard 200

Standard

It’s a so-so week on the Billboard 200 this week.

Amos Lee received his first No. 1 spot on the charts while selling 40,000 with his newest album Mission Bell so that’s good news. The last time Lee was even on the chart was in 2008 when his album Last Days at the Lodge debuted at No. 16. The bad news is that Lee broke the record for the lowest number of albums sold since Nielsen SoundScan started tracking these numbers in 1991. The last time the record was broken was just 2 weeks ago when Cake’s Showroom of Compassion sold 44,000 copies.

Iron and Wine (Samuel Beam) takes the runner up spot with Kiss Each Other Clean selling 39,000. This is also his career high on the charts. Previously, the act hasn’t risen higher than No. 24 on the chart.

The rest of the Billboard 200 is as follows:

  • No. 3 – Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday 38,000
  • No. 4 – 2011 Grammy Nominees, 38,000
  • No. 5 – Bruno Mars’ Doo-Wops and Hooligans, 33,000
  • No. 6 – Mumford and Sons’ Sigh No More, 31,000
  • No. 7 – Taylor Swift’s Speak Now, 31,000
  • No. 8 – Wisin & Yandel’s Los Vaqueros: El Regreso, nearly 31,000
  • No. 9 – Kidz Bop 19, 30,000
  • No. 10 – The Decemberists’ The King Is Dead, 29,000

Nicki Minaj “Does The Creep” On ‘SNL’

Standard

With her colorful personality and love of costumes, I was not surprised to see Nicki Minaj, this week’s musical guest on SNL, in two sketches of this week’s show. First she did a Lonely Island Digital Short where she is “doing the creep.” She spits about ogling and agling guys in a locker room. Watch the clip here:

Next, Minaj was the “Bride of Blackenstein” where she was the one being oogled this time, while cast mates were fixated on her famous backside. She is created as the bride to Kenan Thompson who plays Blackenstein, but Thompson along with Igor, who is played by host Jessie Eisenberg, are in for quite a surprise as Minaj’s attitude comes to life. Watch it here:

Minaj also performed two of her own songs “Moment 4 Life” and “Right Thru Me.”
