Jessie J Quickly Gaining Worldwide Rock Star Status

Standard

It seldom occurs where one’s career is a matter of life and death. Already established Brit star, Jessie J may have one of those careers, however.

“We finished a tour stop in Bristol [England] last night and there were more fans than I’ve seen in my life. For two hours, they tried to sneak on our bus, touching and grabbing me, begging me to sign their pictures, their badges — and their boobs,” she says with a laugh. “One guy knocked a sign into me; I begged him not to kill me.”

The previous night at a show in Glasgow, Scotland, the screams reached such a decibel that the venue’s sound system shorted. “Onstage,” she says, “they kept throwing things at me — notes and messages and God knows what.”

And these are just tales from European gigs. Although nothing this obscene has happened in the U.S. yet, it could. Jessie J, aka Jessica Cornish, 23, has been gaining in popularity since January when her “Do It Like a Dude” single reached No. 2 on the British singles chart and her B.o.B. assisted “Price Tag” reached No. 1 on the singles chart and get this… the top 40 in 18 nations.

Now she’s released her album Who We Are. It dropped Tuesday (Apr. 12) in the United States. Her single “Price Tag,” produced by Dr. Luke, reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart on March 26 and is No. 50 with a bullet on the Hot 100 and No. 26 on Pop Songs. The track was iTunes’ Music Video of the Week in February. And Jessie J was the musical guest on “Saturday Night Live” on March 12 — the first artist to appear on the show before an album release — and performances are on deck for “The View,” “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno,” “Today” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

“She has the substance to become the next big pop star in the U.S.,” Sirius XM VP of music programming Kid Kelly says. “Her sound is noticeably different from the current crop of female icons like Lady GagaP!nk and Britney Spears. Jessie J is absolutely a standout artist.”

Crown Management’s Sarah Stennett, Jessie J‘s manager, says of her client: “What you see is what you get. She hasn’t changed since I met her two-and-a-half years ago.” Stennett said that the type of honesty Jessie J put outs, endears people to her and makes you want to root for her to win.

So far, all signs are pointing in that winning direction.

What do you think of Jessie J? Is she the next worldwide pop icon?

New James Blunt, Reba McEntire, Jessie J in the Jukebox!

Standard

Every day, we are busy loading the jukebox with tons of new music for y’all. We want you to be the first to hear new music first and we want you to hear it HERE! There will soon be a ton of fresh new songs for you to rate so I just wanted to give you a heads up about some of them!

First off, James Blunt’s new album Some Kind of Trouble will be released tomorrow in the United States. It dropped overseas in November. When asked what his favorite single on the album would be, James picks “Turn Me On,” a song that was not even included on the promotional copies of the album due to labels thinking it was too inappropriate. Blunt says the song-sample lyric: “Why get complicated?/You know you want to turn me on”-is “not as emotionally sensitive as they think my audience would like. The track is reportedly being included on the American release and iTunes does have it listed on the album’s track list.

So that is Blunt’s favorite, but as for the first single, it’s called “Stay The Night.” Blunt will spend Grammy’s week hitting “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno,” “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and “Chelsea Lately,” then attend the Feb. 13 ceremony, a date that runs straight into Valentine’s Day. Given “the type of songs James is known for,” Dane Venable, New York-based senior VP of marketing for Atlantic says, the TV shows leading up to the holiday “will create a perfect storm of increased traffic in retail stores.

Here’s James Blunt with “Stay The Night”

There are also two other songs in the jukebox I want to highlight. British pop star Jessie J is making her way to the state’s. She teamed up with B.O.B. to make “Price Tag.”

Also, Reba McEntire did a cover of Beyonce’s “If I Were A Boy.” Reba looked rather emotional when she sang the song on the CMA’s that aired November 10, 2010.

Check these and other brand new songs out in the jukebox right now!

Lady Gaga steals the show at VMAs

Standard

Image via Wenn

Given 13 total nominations at last night’s MTV VMAs, Lady Gaga walked away with a whopping eight moonmen awards and also revealed the title of her new album, and a few verses from a new song.

There’s no doubt the pop star dominated the stage for award collection with the eight coming in the categories of video of the year, best female video, best pop video, best dance video, best collaboration, best choreography, best editing, and best direction.

With her acceptance of video of the year Gaga announced that her upcoming album will be called Born This Way, before belting out a few bars from a new song.

If Gaga wouldn’t have been the talk of the show for her large number of wins, certainly her outfits would have garnered their own attention. One of her outfits included a dress made out of meat with a matching meat hat and meat purse.

After Gaga Eminem was the next big winner with two awards for best male video and best hip-hop video for “Not Afraid.” The Detroit-based rapper also kicked off the ceremony with a performance of “Not Afraid” and “Love The Way You Lie” bringing Rihanna out on stage.  However, by the time his wins were announced Em was already en route to NYC for the last two “Home and Home” shows with Jay-Z which are tonight and tomorrow at Yankee Stadium.

Other winners from last night’s VMA awards include Justin Bieber who won the best new artist award; 30 Seconds To Mars, who won best rock video for “Kings and Queens”; Florence and the Machine who won best art direction for “Dog Days Are Over”; Jay-Z and Alicia Keys earned the best cinematography moonman for “Empire State of Mind” while Muse won the best special effects for “Uprising”; the Black Keys won breakthrough for “Tighten Up”; and Beyonce shared in a best collaboration win with Gaga for “Telephone.”

Other performers last night were Justin Bieber, Usher, Taylor Swift, B.o.B and Hayley Williams, and Kanye West. Swift debuted a new song called “Forgiveness” that was an offer of encouragement to West in light of the incident at last year’s VMAs, before West closed out the awards show with a new song of his own called “Runaway.”

What do you think was the highlight of last night’s VMAs?

As expected, Eminem and Jay-Z show nothing short of epic

Standard

Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage

As expected based from the billing of two of the biggest rappers in the industry teaming up for a show together, Eminem and Jay-Z put on an EPIC show for Detroit last night with support from Dr. Dre, D12, 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Drake, Young Jeezy, Memphis Bleek and of course, show-opener B.o.B who helped make the concert one of the biggest nights in hip-hop history.

Thursday’s show was just the first of 4 stadium performances – two in Detroit, Eminem’s hometown, and two in NYC, Jay-Z’s hometown, hence the “Home and Home” tour title. The second Detroit show goes live tonight, with the two NYC shows being held Sept. 13 & 14.

MTV reports that Eminem gave his hometown a performance of hit after hit, bringing out D12, 50 Cent and the G-Unit before pulling the big Dr. Dre onto stage to the roar of the crowd.

“Got dammit, Detroit. Do I love you or what?” Eminem said. “Look what I brought out for you.” After asking the crowd to show their love, they began chanting “Deeee-tox, Deeeee-tox” in anticipation of Dre’s upcoming album – the first since The Chronic was released in 1992, almost 20 years ago!

In response to the crowd Dre just smiled and said, “I’m Comin’!”

B.o.B, who opened the show, also re-joined Eminem for “Airplanes Part 2.”

After Eminem’s set there was a 10-minute break before Jay-Z exploded on stage. His set included appearances from Jeezy, and Memphis Bleek.

In all, the hip-hop stars shared very little stage time – only when Jay-Z made an appearance for “Renegade” during Em’s set.

You can catch a full recap of the show here on MTV.

Were you at the show last night? Who do you think Jay-Z will bring out when the show heads to his hometown?

B.o.B to open Detroit-based “Home and Home” tour shows

Standard

New details (well, at least one) are emerging from Eminem and Jay-Z’s upcoming stadium shows, the first of which is tomorrow night, Sept. 2 in Detroit’s Comerica Park.

Newcomer B.o.B will be opening the first two of the total four “Home and Home” tour shows, Sept. 2 and Sept. 3 in Detroit.

Monday, the Atlanta rapper’s manager TJ Chapman tweeted: “I’m excited about heading to Detroit tomorrow for a few days! B.o.B is performing @ Tiger Stadium w/ GUESS WHO & WHO????”

B.o.B and Em already have a relationship as the rapper brought Eminem in on his debut album, contributing to his smash hit “Airplanes,” which has been on the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 nearly all summer long.

There have been very few details revealed about the upcoming performances (as we reported here on Monday), but both shows are expected to have a number of famous guests and promise to be epic.

Will you be seeing one of the “Home and Home” shows? If not, do you wish you were?

Eminem notches sixth week atop Hot 100

Standard

Eminem has held on to another No. 1 week atop the Billboard Hot 100 as “Love The Way You Lie” feat. Rihanna continues to increase its airplay, with Billboard reporting a new high of 154.6 million listener impressions thanks in large part to the track now getting spins on R&B stations.

Lil Wayne had a big debut this week on the Hot 100 – despite being behind bars – as his new single “Right Above It” feat. Drake comes in at No. 6. Interestingly enough, Billboard reports that this song is the rappers first chart-topper (No. 1 on the Digital Songs chart) and best sales week on the Digital chart (225,000 downloads), and his highest debuting single as a lead artist on the Hot 100. So, maybe his time at Rikers isn’t so bad for his career after all?

The rest of the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 includes:

  • At No. 4, “I Like It,” Enrique Iglesias feat. Pitbull

This week “California Gurls” comes in at No. 3 on the chart, and “Teenage Dream” squeaks in at No. 5. Her newest track “Circle the Drain” – which many of you rated this week at HitPredictor – came in at No. 58 – do you think it will chart much higher?

Eminem retains No. 1 position on Hot 100

Standard

Taylor Swift comes out swinging with her new single “Mine” but it wasn’t quite enough to dethrone Eminem’s “Love The Way You Lie,” from the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100.

Billboard reports the country star’s new single came in at No. 3 in its debut week, making Swift only the second female artist in the history of the Hot 100 to debut multiple tracks in the top 5 during the calendar year. Swift’s “Today Was a Fairytale,” debuted at No. 2 on the Hot 100 chart dated Feb. 6. The only other female artist to have done so is Mariah Carey who at two tracks “Fantasy,” and “One Sweet Day,” open at No. 1 in 1995.

The rest of the Hot 100 top 10 includes:

  • At No. 2, “Dynamite,” Taio Cruz

But don’t feel too bad for Perry, Billboard reports her hit “California Gurls” is still at No. 2 on the Hot 100 and has a partner in the top 10 as her second single from her new album “Teenage Dream” screams in to No. 7 on the chart.

Lady Gaga earns record-breaking 13 VMA nods

Standard

Chalk up another record for Lady Gaga, as she earned a total of 13 MTV VMA nods in today’s official nomination announcement. The pop star is also the first female artist to be nominated for the Video of the Year award twice; she also collected nominations in categories including Best Pop Video, Best Female Video, and Best Dance Video among others.

In a statement Lady Gaga responded to the record-breaking announcement saying: “I’m so honored for all the little monsters and self-professed freaks of the universe, to have more VMA nominations in a single year than any artist in MTV history. Ironically, I’m even more proud it’s an unlucky number; 13. A long time ago the world told me and my little monsters we would never be heard, together we changed the rules. God put me on Earth for 3 reasons: To make loud music, gay videos, and cause a damn raucous,  Thank You MTV!”

Billboard reports Eminem led the male artists with eight VMA nominations. The rapper expressed his gratitude with in a statement saying: “Apparently MTV doesn’t care that I have two massive stadium shows on the other side of the country the day after the VMA’s.” [VMAs will air live from Los Angeles’ Nokia Theater on Sept. 12.] F me, right?!?! I mean, I’ll be there but don’t expect me to be nice about it.”

Among the other top nomination getters was newcomer B.o.B who Billboard reports earned five nominations for his debut single “Nothin’ On You” while Ke$ha grabbed three for her “Tik Tok” single.

Finally, teen sensation Justin Bieber received his first VMA nomination for Best New Artist for his lead single “Baby” from My World 2.0.

You can vote for the general VMA categories starting today here at MTV!

Eminem maintains No. 1 spot on Hot 100, sets new record

Standard

Eminem has recorded another big week as not only does Recovery hold the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200, but his single “Love The Way You Lie” featuring Rihanna maintains its peak at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for a second straight week.

Billboard reports “Love The Way You Lie” earned the chart’s Airplay Gainer award for its fourth straight week, pushing it to No. 5 on Hot 100 Airplay, and holding on to the No. 1 standing on Digital Songs for a fifth week ever widening its points lead over Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” which it successfully bumped to No. 2 last week.

Billboard reports that Eminem is the first artist in the “digital age” to concurrently hold the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 and the Hot Digital Songs for five straight weeks.

The rest of the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 includes:

  • At No. 2, “California Gurls,” Katy Perry
  • At No. 3, “Dynamite,” Taio Cruz
  • At No. 4, “Airplanes,” B.o.B featuring Hayley Williams
  • At No. 5, “Billionaire,” Travie McCoy featuring Bruno Mars

Of interest is Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream,” which came in at No. 20 in its first week of availability – are you a fan of this new song?  Another new entry on the chart is Bruno Mars’ first solo single “Just The Way You Are,” a song several members have tipped off as having great potential, so definitely one we’re looking to get in the jukebox soon!

Katy Perry holds top spot on Hot 100 for sixth straight week

Standard

Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” featuring Snoop Dogg continues to hold No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for its sixth straight week.

However, Billboard predicts it may be Perry’s last week on top since Eminem’s “Love The Way You Lie” featuring Rihanna, this week’s No. 2 on the Hot 100, is also the chart’s Airplay Gainer for a second straight week, which puts it in line to take over the top spot next week.

The rest of the Hot 100 Top 10 includes:

  • At No. 3, “Airplanes,” B.o.B featuring Hayley Williams
  • At No. 4, “OMG” Usher featuring will.i.am

Melismatic: The Year 2010, Part 1 (2.0)

Standard

The following is a special guest post feature from our dear friend Mel, of Melismatic, who has written a two-part series on the state of Music in the first half of 2010. What follows is part two of her series. To see part one click here. And for more (lots more!) on all things pop, check out Mel’s blog – Melismatic.

The Year 2010, Part 1 (2.0)

Whether you choose to agree or not, numbers will always be an important indicator in pop music. No question — records aren’t selling the way they used to, but actual sales, whether they are of singles or full albums, online or in stores, will always serve as concrete evidence as to what is working in the pop marketplace. Pop at its core is a reflection of what is considered pop-ular.

Now, was I over the moon with all of America’s choices in terms of what songs were most exciting in the past six months? Well…in short, no. But the eight songs that have graced the tip-top of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart so far in 2010 each have something to say in regards to our current marketplace, whether its an ripple effect from past success, or hints at something in the future.

Oh, yeah, I’m going all philosophical. Or something. Pull up a chair, this is a long(-ish) one. Click the cut. Let’s start a discussion.

Ke$ha – “Tik Tok” (January to March 2010)
Yes, I included it in my list of the Top 29 Songs of 2(00)9 and no, I’m not reneging on my statements. I’m hardly Ke$ha’s biggest fan, and I’ve stated my complaints in terms of her image and artist development before. “Tik Tok” remains to be a fun little nugget (if not just a touch overplayed). The fact that the song held on to the top of the Hot 100 list for nine whole weeks, the longest stretch for any song so far in 2010 (and it’s fair to say, in this whole decade, no?), is kind of staggering enough. The comparisons of the song to Lady Gaga‘s “Poker Face” are quite valid in spots. At the time of its success, everyone with any kind of validated position wanted to state right away whether Ke$ha was a force to be reckoned with or a ship waiting to pass in the night. I was somewhere in the middle, but now, its July and Ke$ha’s yet to duplicate her debut single’s success. Hmmm…

Black Eyed Peas – “I’mma Be” (March 2010)
It’s almost a blip in terms of the monumental success they received last year with “Boom Boom Pow” and “I’ve Gotta Feeling”. It’s also kind of half what either of those songs were. It’s a nod to how surprisingly strong The E.N.D. album ended up being, but was hardly something I thought would be a hit, especially considering the song was released as a “pre-single” in the weeks leading up to the album’s release.

Taio Cruz – “Break Your Heart” (feat. Ludacris) (March 2010)
Not unlike Jay Sean and Jason DeRulo before him, Taio may just be known in the US as one of those, “Remember that guy? With that one song? Where did he go?” It’s not to say he’s not incredibly talented — I was a part of his support team back in the “I Just Wanna Know” (a far superior track in my mind), and I’m certainly rooting for him. Honestly, the fact that the song connected so strong for him to gain the #1 position seemingly out of nowhere will remain to be one of 2010’s mysteries.

Rihanna – “Rudeboy” (March to May 2010)
Hardly the best track on Rated R album (but definitely one of the catchiest), “Rude Boy” stands alone as Rihanna’s first real return to form chart-wise after her scandal with Chris Brown in February of ’09. My feelings on the song (or indeed the entire project) have not changed. I still wish I could click my heels and rewind in the hopes that Rated R could be a bit more 1) uplifting and empowering, or 2) raw and emotional, especiallyin terms of single choices. Instead, we get this,”Wait Your Turn”, “Hard” and some song about a gun that I don’t even want to remember. She started to win me back over with the recent release of “Te Amo”, but it felt a bit like a throwaway last resort prior to moving on to fresh thing (not totally unlike “Rehab” from the Good Girl Gone Bad era, my favorite cut from the disc).

B.o.B – “Nothin’ On You” (feat. Bruno Mars) (May 2010)
This surprising little number was yet another that came out of nowhere. It remains to be the sole #1 of the past six months that really like, and continue to spin. “Airplanes” has begun to trump it a bit in terms of personal playing, but I enjoy B.o.B. (aka Bobby Ray) for bringing fun back into the rap game, and for introducing Bruno Mars to the mainstream — a truly underrated vocalist. Here’s to hoping we’ll continue to see more from both gentlemen.

Usher – “OMG” (feat. will.i.am) (May 2010; May to June 2010)
I don’t have too much to say. When this song first went to #1, I assumed it was an homage to what Usher used to be. When it returned to the top position after being interrupted, no one was more shocked than I, considering there isn’t much to this song that makes it particularly memorable. OMG indeed.

Eminem – “Not Afraid” (June 2010)
Again, a tribute to what Eminem used to be. While his record sold a respectable amount, and he deserves kudos for this, I think it’s quite obvious that Eminem is now a changed man, and therefore a changed artist. Part of what made him so exciting in the pop market was his penchant for catchy, ridiculous rhymes and painfully gritty realism. Both are kind of missing here. I’m not his biggest fan, and I never have been, but success should be noted and respected. After going through some truly difficult events in the last few years, I was expecting a bigger, more honest splash.

Katy Perry – “California Gurls” (feat. Snoop Dogg) (June to July 2010)
So she’s back for more, eh? Perhaps it’s part of my bias as a Empire Stategirl. Perhaps it’s her dissing of Lady Gaga when much of her career was quite literally built on shock value and false advertising herself. Either way you slice it, I’m not fond of this number. Sure, it’s summery. Doesn’t mean it melts my Popsicle. (The double-entendre literally disturbs me.)

Truthfully, 2010 really has been great so far in terms of singles and albums, but so many of those albums and singles have gone somewhat unnoticed by the mass public. It’s saddening, because if only these types of songs were given larger platforms for success and a bigger label push, there is no question their connection to Average Joe and Josephine.

What are your thoughts?

Katy Perry extends “California Gurls” run to five straight weeks

Standard

How long can she hold onto the No. 1 position on the Hot 100? Well that’s a question that won’t be answered until – at earliest – next week as Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” extends its run on the top of the Hot 1oo to five weeks, with Billboard reporting that airplay for Perry’s first single off the forthcoming Teenage Dream is still continuing to build.

Perry and Snoop Dogg were able to fend off the huge leap Eminem made with “Love The Way You Lie” featuring Rihanna, which blasted in at No. 2 last week and held steady at that position. Billboard reports that most download-fueled top 10 debuts (such as this one) normally slip in their second week on the list, but that Eminem’s new track hardly dropped its download numbers at all. Another interesting tidbit on the Detroit-based rapper is that his first single from Recovery, “Not Afraid” moved back into the top 10 this week, giving Em simultaneous top 10s for the first time in his career.

The rest of the Hot 100 top 10 includes:

  • At No. 3, “OMG,” Usher feat. will.i.am
  • At No. 4, “Airplanes,” B.o.B feat. Hayley Williams
  • At No. 5, “Billionaire,” Travie McCoy
  • At No. 6, “Cooler Than Me,” Mike Posner
  • At No. 7, “Dynamite,” Taio Cruz
  • At No. 8, “Find Your Love,” Drake
  • At No. 9, “Ridin’ Solo,” Jason Derulo
  • At No. 10, “Not Afraid,” Eminem

Do you have any of these tracks on heavy rotation? Or, are there any you think are getting too MUCH airplay?
