Stone Temple Pilots put tour on hold just days following bizarre antics by Weiland on stage

Standard

Stone Temple Pilots have put their reunion tour on hold, just days after what appeared to be a public meltdown of frontman Scott Weiland at their Houston, Tex. stop. At that performance the band took the stage late – an entire hour after tour opener Black Rebel Motorcycle Club’s set, and was interrupted by Weiland slurring between songs about past drug use, thoughts on grunge music, the in-ear monitors, why bands don’t destroy gear any more, and some of STP’s first gigs. A review by the Houston Press says Weiland was finally interrupted by the band, which started playing the next song to get him to stop talking.

Among the highlights of Weiland’s antics: “The 8th of December will be the time when I stopped doing dope,” Weiland said, then hushed the crowd as it began to cheer. “No, no, no, no” he continued. “I started drinking again. My brother died, I got divorced to my wife, and my whole world basically spun around. So you know what? I’m going to take care of myself because that’s what I need to take care of. Instead of just having a few shows, I want to have a whole hell of a lot of shows.”

It’s not clear whether or not the tour break is due to this behavior (detailed in a video available on the Houston Press Web site), but one can assume that it played some role in the decision to postpone 12 dates on the tour. According to an announcement on the STP Web site, the group will re-route for a “short break” and hit the road again Oct. 8 in Tampa, Fla.

Stone Temple Pilots released their first album in nine years in May; the self-titled work debuted at No. 2 and has sold 130,000 copies to date according to Billboard.

Do you think Weiland’s antics on stage are the reason for the tour break? Do you think he can “recover” during the break or will there be more performances like the one in Houston to come?

Just a few weeks ago we were testing music for Stone Temple Pilots, who just released their new self-titled album on May 25.

The album is the first the group has released in nine years, and landed in the Billboard 200 in its first week, making it the sixth top 10 album the band has produced out of its entire collection of studio albums.

Glee edges Stone Temple Pilots to maintain lead on Billboard 200

Standard

Glee holds onto the top spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart for a second straight week with its Glee: The Music, Volume 3 – Showstoppers after moving 63,000 copies according to Nielsen SoundScan.

It was just enough to edge Stone Temple Pilots from taking the No. 1 slot as their first studio album release (self-titled) moved 62,000 units last week coming in at No. 2. However, the album’s No. 2 slot makes it the group’s sixth top 10 album according to Billboard.com, which comprises the band’s entire collection of studio releases!

As to whether Glee can hold on for a third week – industry experts don’t expect it to thanks to Jack Johnson’s To The Sea, just released this week, which is expected to debut at No. 1 with an expected 250,000 copies sold by the charting week’s end (June 6).

The rest of the Billboard 200 includes:

  • At No. 3, My World 2.0, Justin Bieber, 50,000
  • At No. 4, Need You Now, Lady Antebellum, 46,000
  • At No. 5, Raymond v. Raymond, Usher, 35,000
  • At No. 6, The Fame, Lady Gaga, 31,000
  • At No. 7, Exile on Main St., Rolling Stones, 28,000
  • At No. 8, Brothers, The Black Keys, just over 26,000
  • At No. 9, Live at the Troubadour, James Taylor and Carole King, just under 26,000
  • At No. 10, Distant Relatives, Nas and Damian Marley, 25,000

Were any of these albums on your “to buy” list this week? Or, is the new Jack Johnson on it instead?

Stone Temple Pilots new album predicted to debut high on charts

Standard

This week, Stone Temple Pilots released its first new album in nine years, and Billboard.com is predicting that this new release may very well be positioned as the chart’s highest debut next week.

Industry experts are predicting the self-titled release by STP will sell anywhere between 60-70,000 copies by the charting week’s end, May 30. At that number it may in fact be enough to claim the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200, depending on how much Glee – The Music Volume 3: Showstoppers drops off in its second week, after debuting at No. 1 and moving 136,000 units this past week.

Billboard reports that any arrival within the top 10 will mark the sixth top 10 the band has produced out of its entire collection of studio albums, with only its greatest hits, Thank You, missing the mark and peaking at No. 26 in 2003.

Have you been anxiously awaiting new Stone Temple Pilots for basically the past decade and are picking up the group’s new album soon?
