Nicki Minaj’s “Your Love” is an example of how a leak can go viral and help an artist. Many studios fear leaks thinking it will kill sales. However, Minaj’s leak of what she considered to be a throwaway track has landed her at the top of Billboard’s rap chart – the first solo female hip-hop artist to do so in more than eight years, according to MTV News!
In an interview with MTV Minaj said “I was not planning on putting the song out at all. But then I heard it one day, somebody told me it was online. And I was like, ‘No way, no way in the world that song is out.’ I went and listened to it and was really upset. It wasn’t mixed, it wasn’t finished, it wasn’t anything — I wasn’t gonna use it at all. But then radio started playing it.”
It’s what she hoped would have happened with the her debut single “Massive Attack,” backed by a heavyweight support staff – produced by Alex Da Kid (Eminem, B.o.B), with a hook penned by Sean Garrett (Beyoncé), and a Hype Williams directed video that just didn’t catch on.
Minaj is still hard at work on her as yet untitled debut album, which she aims to release by the end of the year.
Do you think the fans Minaj gained from her “accidental” single will be willing to buy her debut album? Or, do you think she runs the risk of being a one-hit wonder despite the management team (including Diddy) she’s got surrounding her?
